April 4: More Love, Richard Wilbur,, "Wedding Toast"

I found a Richard Wilbur poem that I have never read before.  A love poem.  It sort of takes my breath away.

I think I spend way too much of my day focused on not-so-important stuff.  Worrying about money and car troubles and lunch and dinner.  That's what being human is, I guess.  Being distracted from what really matters.  The current President of the United States is a master at distraction.

In the movie Citizen Kane, one of Kane's best friends says this about him:  "That's all he ever wanted out of life... was love. That's the tragedy of Charles Foster Kane."  That's what every person in the world wants, I think.  To love and be loved.  That may sound corny, but I believe it.

Saint Marty thinks we all need more love in our lives.

Wedding Toast

by:  Richard Wilbur

St. John tells how, at Cana's wedding feast,
The water-pots poured wine in such amount
That by his sober count
There were a hundred gallons at the least.

It made no earthly sense, unless to show
How whatsoever love elects to bless
Brims to a sweet excess
That can without depletion overflow.

Which is to say that what love sees is true;
That this world's fullness is not made but found.
Life hungers to abound
And pour its plenty out for such as you.

Now, if your loves will lend an ear to mine,
I toast you both, good son and dear new daughter.
May you not lack for water,
And may that water smack of Cana's wine.
